Job Description

Barcan+Kirby are seeking an experienced lawyer to join their Private Client team based in either Thornbury or Horfield.

The role will cover probate, trust, and elderly client work including estate administration, Wills, tax planning and Lasting Powers of Attorney.

There is the opportunity to fast track into a leadership/partnership posting for the right candidate.

Job description

Key responsibilities

  • All aspects of private client work including probate, estate administration, Wills, tax planning LPAs and trusts
  • Providing technical advice and support for the team
  • Keep up to date with any changes in the law
  • Update training for all fee earners
  • Training of junior staff in conjunction with the Head of Department and the Team Leader
  • Conduct of matters on behalf of clients in an appropriate and efficient manner
  • Take and record clear instructions
  • Give expert advice tailored to each clients’ needs
  • Management and supervision of support services including departmental secretaries and paralegals
  • Participation in marketing activities whether on a firm-wide, departmental or office basis
  • Financial control with particular regard to cash flow control through accurate time-recording, collection of monies on account and billing procedures
  • Comply with CPD requirements and identify specific training needs
  • Ensure compliance with SAR, SRA Code of Conduct and Lexcel rules and requirements for all matters for which you have conduct and promptly advise the Head of Department of any matter of concern
  • Share knowledge and ideas with your colleagues in the department and firm-wide, as appropriate
  • Any other reasonable duties as directed by your manager

Person specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential

  • A 5-year PQE qualified solicitor or FCILEx with experience and an interest in Wills and estate administration, and LPAs
  • Experience with elderly and vulnerable clients
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent drafting skills
  • IT literate and confident using and adapting to new systems and processes

Desirable

  • Experience in trust work and/or elderly client issues
  • Experience in managing a team
  • Extensive knowledge in tax

Qualifications

Essential

  • Qualified solicitor or FCILEx

Desirable

  • Prepared to study towards STEP qualifications
  • STEP and/or SFE is desirable, or a willingness to work to obtain

Location and salary

  • Based at our Thornbury or Horfield office
  • This is a full-time position (office hours are 9am to 5:15pm, including a 1hr unpaid lunch break), however part-time hours will be considered
