Job Description

Barcan+Kirby’s Residential Conveyancing department is expanding and we are looking to recruit a Paralegal into our team to provide administrative and secretarial support to the fee earners at our busy Gloucester Road office. The department works across six offices in Bristol and the surrounding area, and actively encourages career progression.

The team currently consists of two senior fee earners, a Legal Secretary and an Administration Assistant. The team undertakes all elements of residential conveyancing including sales, purchases, transfers of equity and remortgages.

The role

As a Paralegal, you will provide cost-effective residential fee earning and administrative support to the department. You can expect to be involved in:

  • Providing estimates for matters by telephone, email, post and in person as required
  • Undertaking certain elements of fee earning, working under supervision
  • Interviewing clients, receiving and taking instructions, keeping detailed file notes of instructions received and advice given
  • Drafting of contract documentation, obtaining documents from the Land Registry and collating documents to include in the contract pack
  • Drafting reports on title, mortgage offers and search results
  • Ordering all necessary searches as directed by the fee earner
  • Preparation and submission of Stamp Duty Land Transaction Returns
  • Reporting to clients and mortgage lenders with completed registration documentation and deeds, as required
  • Dealing with routine client enquiries and communications, and requests for updates from clients, estate agents, other solicitors/Licensed Conveyancers and mortgage lenders/brokers
  • Maintaining file check lists
  • Assisting fee earners with research
  • Checking all draft documents

In addition to this, you will be required to assist with day-to-day administrative tasks as and when required, and support with accounts procedures relating to the role. You will also be encouraged to participate in marketing and business development activities on behalf of the department.

Location and working hours

  • Full-time (office hours are 9am – 5.15pm, Monday to Friday)
  • You will be based at our Gloucester Road office with the option to apply for hybrid working upon successful completion of your probation

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have paralegal experience, preferably in a residential conveyancing team, have an LPC or a Paralegal Practice Qualification, be a Trainee CILEx* or have a Law degree.

*If you are not currently working towards this, you must be prepared to simultaneously commence this qualification.
